/katy perry - the one that got away/
tuesday, january 17th, 2012-it's time for the bride to go dress shopping. The bridesmaids will only be attending this as well as the bride’s mother. The men will be going to get their tuxes, if they don’t already own them.
I'm going shopping with my mom today. Haven't seen her in ages. She's finally in the city. I already have a fancy outfit planned. Coral definitely looks good on my tanned skin.
She's waiting for me outside my apartment building. As I approach, she hugs me.
"You are so skinny, do you even eat?" She starts asking questins immediately.
"Yes, mom, I do eat. I've just had a lot of problems lately."
"Problems, like, drugs, alcohol, crazy stalkers, fights, rapists?"
I love my mom. I really do. But sometimes she is really annoying.
"No mom. Just normal stuff." I roll my eyes.
Although I know that I'm lying. Seriously, having an ex- boyfriend in mafia, realizing your new friend is his sister, and that he also has a twin brother... well that's not easy.
"Come here, give me another hug."
"Mom, this is really awkward." We are in the middle of a street.
"I know, silly." She hugs me again.
Then we finally start walking. My mom really doesn't like designer stores though.
"Maria, honey, when you die, your children will only inherit your shoes."
"I like to have quality and designer things mom. I earn my money. I buy them with my money."
"And what if your grandchildren don't wear the same size as you...?"
"Mom, stop it."
We finally arrive at the Prada store. Oh, I love Prada.
"Honey, those shoes are ridiculous. They look like something from a cartoon. Put them down."
I don't want to fight. I know my mother and fighting with her is not something I want. I can always come back for the shoes later.
"Okay, what about this blouse?" I ask politely.
"Honey, seriously. It looks like someone died in it. And for this price tag, it must have been the Queen herself."
"Mom, the Queen is still alive."
"Well, you get my point."
We leave the store empty-handed.
"Mom, maybe we should check out Forever 21?"
"Yes, honey, please."
"Great. We'll have to walk a lot to get to their store, so prepare yourself."
"Honey, you're the one wearing heels."
"Oh mum..."
At F21 store, my mom is finally happy. She found some stuff she needed, and I found some cute stuff too. I will still be coming back for those Pradas, though.
As we leave the store, my mom is finally happy. But that doesn't last long, of course.
"Now, Maria, honey, tell me where is that handsome boyfriend of yours?" She always loved Alexi. That's weird. She loves him more than she loves me.
I catch my breath.
"We broke up."
"Of course you did. He was too good for you. Handsome, well-educated, smart, and tall. I knew he would dumb you."
"He didn't dump me. I broke up with him."
"YOU ARE NOT NORMAL. You have to ask him for forgiveness. You are not so young anymore, Maria. You're 23, you should have married someone by now."
"Mom, please, stop it. I had a reason to break up with him, and we're not getting back together."
"So, when was the last time you saw him?"
"Why is that so important?"
"I'm just asking, Maria."
"Yesterday. We were in Moscow for 3 days..."
My mom opens her mouth and I know she'll start saying how perfect he is.
"AS FRIENDS, mom. Only as friends. He's a good friend. Nothing more than that."
"Okay, Maria, but I'm really worried."
We start walking and talking about random stuff again. And then, I see Alexi, with a tux in his hand.
He stops and then smiles. My mom screams and hugs him.
"Oh, you charming young man, where are you going with that tux?" He smiles.
"Well, I am getting ready for a wedding."
"How are you, Maria?" He shakes my hand.
I remember Moscow, the wedding, kisses, the cab driver, the drunk man, the fight, the long walks, the matryoshka doll... that was one day ago. And it feels like that stuff happened an eternity ago.
Now it feels like we are strangers.
"I'm fine, just listening to my mom talking bad stuff about my favorite store."
He laughs.
"Oh, ma'am, please don't talk about Prada like that."
My mom hugs him again.
"You are such a sweet guy, Alexi. She didn't deserve you."
"Oh, yes, she did deserve me. In fact, she was too good for me, ma'am."
"Aaah, Alexi, you are too young. You'll find a nice girl one day. And my daughter will get old and she will be all alone. She will only have her cats."
"MOM, ENOUGH. Alexi, we are leaving. It was very nice to see you."
I know he feels sorry. But I'm already so tired.
"Mom, why don't you stop. I will not marry Alexi. I will find a nice guy and marry him. And we will be happy."
"And where will you find him? At Prada while buying ridiculous shoes?"
"Mom, enough about Prada."
"You should go out more. Go clubbing."
"But I will find Prince Charming drunk at a club? Classy, mom, classy."
